Fixing Our Jeep Oil Pan Leak

Replacing a Jeep Wrangler 2.5L Oil Pan Gasket isn’t that hard, and will only take a few hours. The hardest part of installing a pan gasket is probably the cleanup on the pan and clean the Jeep 2.5L engine pan surface. The funniest part of this project was me watching my son do it all.

Step We Follow To Replace An Oil Pan Gasket

For most 4×4 Jeeps you won’t have to left it or have anything impede your access to the oil pan. Make sure the undercarriage is clean on the jeep, nothing like getting dirt in your eyes or engine.

Always Disconnect The Battery Before You Work On Your Ride

Before you start the oil pan gasket replace, disconnect the battery. You will have to remove the started and if the battery is connected you will get a direct battery short. We remove the ground to the battery, also we had to drain the amp cap before starting.

Jeep Starter Removal

Removing the starter is only two bolts and some wires. Start by removing the wires off the starter. Take note of where each wire terminates, you will have to put them back on. Then you may have some struggles getting the starter out, just takes time and determination.

Getting The Jeep Flywheel Cover Off

Now on to the flywheel cover on the Jeep 2.5L. Be sure to hold on to this before you remove that last bolt, this falling on you could leave a mark. Removing the flywheel cover you will probably need a bigger wrench, these bolts are on there. In our video, you will see us struggle to remove these. Once the Jeep flywheel cover is off it’s a great time to clean up behind where the flywheel is.

Taking off the pan you are going to find that the bolts are easy to remove, well they are only torqued down to a max of 11 ft-lb. Make sure that when removing the oil pan bolts to know where they go back for installation. Once all the bolts are out the oil pan and oil pan strap on the back may fall down so be ready for it. If it does fall you may have to smack it on the side to break the oil pan free.

How To Check Engine Oil For Metal

With the pan off it is a great time to check for the metal in your pan. This will help you determine how much wear you have on your engine. To check for metal in the oil pan all you need is a magnet. Then stick the magnet in the bottom of the pan and hope it doesn’t pick up metal.

Clean Gasket Surfaces

Once you are sure your Jeep 2.5L is worth repairing you must clean the surfaces. For scraping the flat surfaces, we used a gasket scraper and a razor. We don’t use a wire grinder, this can scare the machined surfaces. After the surface are scraped clean, take a rag and soapy water and wipe the gasket surfaces down. This will help the gasket silicone stick.

Pre Jeep Oil Pan Gasket For Install

When you are ready to put the gasket in place we put a little extra silicone in the corners. The corners on most oil pan gaskets are where they tend to leak. We then applied a thin layer of silicone to the rest of the pan gasket. Too much silicone can cause issues if it squeezes out inside the engine and clogs oil passages.

Installing Jeep 2.5 Oil Pan

Now you want to stick the gasket on the engine. We put it on the pan and used the pan to hold the gasket in place as the silicone cured for 2 hours. I have put the gasket on without the oil pan and used the bolts to hold it up for two hours to cure the silicone. Both methods work, but if the gasket starts to squeeze out the back of the on, you will have to pull the oil pan off and start over.

Once the silicone has cured for 2 hours, go back and tighten the oil pan up. Use a max torque of 11 ft-lbs on the oil pan bolts, they will break pretty easy if over-torqued. Then is install your Jeep flywheel cover, starter, and add oil.

We waited till the next day to add oil giving our silicone the 24 hours needed to fully dry. Then it was off to the trails for my son and his friends. Mom and I get to sit at home wondering what he will break next on this Jeep YJ.
