I Used the DOG VACUUM to Cut My Hair! ✂️ (Rat Chats, Citrus FAIL, & DR Boat Life VLOG)
Is there anything more “cruiser life” than using pet grooming tools on yourself? I don’t think so.
This week on Chris Does What With Danielle, we are deep in prep mode. We are getting ready to leave the Dominican Republic and head for Puerto Rico, but naturally, things didn’t go exactly to plan. Between mosquito swarms, giant sour fruit, and a haircut I might regret, this episode is pure chaotic boat life.
Here is a look at what went down!
✂️ The Dog Vacuum Haircut Disaster
Let’s start with the main event. We decided it was time for trims all around—starting with the puppy. But once the dog was looking fresh, I looked in the mirror and thought, “Why not?”
Yes, I used the dog vacuum trimmer on my own hair.
Does it suck up the hair so you don’t make a mess on the boat? Yes. Does it give you a salon-quality fade? …Let’s just say you have to watch the video to judge for yourself. It’s practical, I’ll give it that!
🍊 The Giant Citrus Fail (Citrus Maxima)
We found these massive, grapefruit-looking things at the market called Citrus Maxima. Naturally, we bought one thinking it would be an epic snack.
Spoiler Alert: It was a total fail. Imagine the thickest rind you’ve ever seen, followed by fruit that is somehow dry and incredibly sour at the same time. Not exactly the sweet tropical treat we were hoping for.
⛵ Passage Prep: DR to Puerto Rico
We headed into town to chat with other sailors who are gearing up for the “Thorny Path”—the passage from the DR to Puerto Rico.
This is a notorious stretch of water, so getting local knowledge is key. We talked routing, weather windows, and what to expect when we finally drop the lines. If you are planning this trip, you won’t want to miss the advice we picked up.
🍕 Feasts & “Pineapple Stormies”
Despite the fruit fail, we ate well this week!

Solar Powered Brunch: We took advantage of the Caribbean sun to cook up a full brunch entirely on solar power.

Epic Homemade Pizza: Danielle crushed it in the galley again with a homemade pizza that almost made up for the sour citrus.

Pineapple Stormies: We washed it all down with our new favorite cocktail, the “Pineapple Stormy.” (Recipe coming soon… maybe!)
🐀 Rat Chats & Mosquito Swarms
It wasn’t all food and fun, though. The mosquitoes have been swarming us lately, turning the cockpit into a no-fly zone. And if that wasn’t enough, we had some serious “Rat Chats”—dealing with the less glamorous side of keeping pests off the boat.
It’s real cruiser vibes this week: high highs, itchy lows, and a very questionable haircut. Thanks for following the adventure!
