Chris Does What "With Danielle"

THE LIVEABOARD REALITY

14 months Off-Grid has taught us a lot. Most people think that means we’re living in a Corona commercial, but the reality is just a constant battle against the “Island Squeeze.” You either master the logistics of living on the hook or you go home.

14 Months Off-Grid: Why We Haven’t Touched a Dock ⚓️ Ep. 104

In this one, Danielle and I head into Luperon to beat the Independence Day shutdown. It’s a mix of navigating raw sewage on the streets, hunting for “feet meat” at the butcher, and praying the vacuum bags hold so the boat doesn’t turn into a mold factory while we’re gone.

THE BUTT PUCKER RATING: 1/5

Status: Hustle

The Squeeze: Navigating high-wind chop in a 20-year-old plastic dinghy to grab Amazon packages and prepping a high-anxiety dog for an international flight.

THE SQUEEZE: Mastering the Supply Chain

  1. The Conflict: Independence Day was about to shut down the town, and we needed supplies from Box Pack immediately.
  2. The Constraints: High winds made the “boat car” (our Walker Bay) a soaked ride, and we’re dealing with rusting gear and a dog that doesn’t understand crates.
  3. The Solution: Executed a heavy supply run, prioritized vacuum-sealing fabrics for mold prevention, and started the crate-training protocol for Bella.

THE FULL BREAKDOWN

We hit the shore in our “car”—a 20-year-old Walker Bay dinghy that’s still ticking while the $5,000 inflatables rot at the dock. In Luperon, you walk the middle of the road because the edges are uneven and the sewage is raw.

The haul included vacuum bags for boat preservation and a new crate for Bella. Back on the boat, the focus is power. We are running 100% electric on 880W of bifacial solar and 800Ah of lithium. While we’re cooking bacon and running the watermaker, the batteries stay healthy at 55-80%—zero generator required.

THE TECHNICAL INTEL

  • The Gear: 880W Aptose Bifacial Solar, 800Ah (10kWh) Lithium Bank, 20yo Walker Bay Dinghy.
  • The Environment: Tropical humidity (mold-critical) and high-wind bay chop.
  • The Result: 100% energy autonomy; boat prep initiated for storage; dog export prep in progress.

HO MAID CHEF: Slow Cooker Roast 101

When you’re off-grid, you cook with the sun. We use the slow cooker during peak solar hours to save the batteries for the night.

  • The Hack: Use paper bags for onions, garlic, and potatoes. The fridge is too small and the air is too humid; paper bags prevent “eyes” from growing and keep your veggies alive for weeks.
  • Ingredients: Organic local potatoes (dirt included), local butcher meat (minus the feet), and local greens.

VETERAN ADVICE: The Hard Truth

The “pretty sunset” channels won’t tell you this: if you don’t vacuum seal your life, the tropics will eat it. We’re prepping to leave the boat for a few months. If every blanket and towel isn’t sucked into a plastic void, we’ll come back to a disaster. Off-grid life is 10% sailing and 90% stopping physics from destroying your gear.
