If you’ve been following our battle against the Florida elements, you know our yard has been a primary combat zone. We just finished our third application with TruGreen, and the transformation is finally becoming permanent. The dollar weeds—which were taking over our St. Augustine grass just a few weeks ago—are now almost non-existent.
Here is the technical update on the lawn recovery and the specific challenges we’re tackling in this third phase.
The Investigation: Dollar Weeds and Mushrooms
While we’ve won the war against the broadleaf weeds, Florida’s humidity has introduced a new opponent: Fungi.
- The Dollar Weed Defeat: After three consistent applications, the dollar weed population is “history.” These weeds are a classic sign of over-saturated soil (common near our golf course property line), but the targeted herbicides have finally broken their life cycle.
- The Mushroom Issue: We’ve noticed an uptick in mushrooms and fungus on one side of the house. This is often a result of high moisture trapped in the thatch layer of the grass.
- The “Insecticide” Layer: This application wasn’t just about nutrients and weeds; it included an insecticide treatment to keep lawn pests from reversing our progress.
The Project: Application Three & Maintenance
I spoke with Adrian (ADR) from TruGreen during the service to get the latest post-application protocols. If you’re managing your own lawn or using a service, these rules are non-negotiable:
- Watering Protocol: Unlike weed killers that need to dry on the leaf, the fertilizer and granular treatments applied today actually benefit from water. You can water the lawn immediately after the technician leaves to help the nutrients reach the root zone.
- Safety First: Because this application contains insecticides, it is critical to keep pets and people off the grass until the treatment has been watered in and the lawn is dry.
- Aeration is Next: To truly fix the soil health and prevent future fungus/mushroom issues, we have professional aeration scheduled next. This will help with soil compaction and allow the roots to breathe.
The Logistics: Community and Cooking
One of the best parts of this process is the people. Adrian is a pro with the sprayer, but he’s also a serious cook. We had a great talk about recipe development—it seems everyone has a hidden talent in the kitchen!
What’s Next?
We’ll be filming the aeration process soon to show how mechanical soil improvement helps the chemical treatments work even better. The goal is a lush, deep-green carpet that makes the HOA forget we ever had a “weed problem.”
