Setting Sail: The Journey Begins

Our journey started with a plan to reach Fort Lauderdale and explore Lake Sylvia. As we set sail, we encountered the tide pushing against us, making our initial progress slow. Timing our approach to the bridges became crucial to avoid long waits. Each bridge opening brought a sense of relief, and we eagerly anticipated our arrival at the anchorage.

“What does my babe think of this trip?” I asked. She responded, “It’s been long; I’m ready to sit back and relax for a minute.” The anticipation of reaching Fort Lauderdale kept our spirits high, despite the challenges we faced.

Navigating the Waterways

One of the most challenging aspects of sailing through canals is managing the currents and winds. Holding our position while waiting for the bridges to open proved to be a test of patience. The constant push from the current made it difficult to stay steady, and we often found ourselves drifting towards the mangroves.

As we approached the final bridge, excitement built up. “We’re moving!” I exclaimed, but we still had several nautical miles to navigate before reaching our anchorage. The holiday spirit was evident as we passed beautifully decorated houses, with one particularly large Christmas tree catching our eye.

Fort Lauderdale: Arrival and Observations

Upon reaching Lake Sylvia, we were met with a crowded anchorage. Boats surrounded us, and the tight space felt unnerving. The sight of a derelict boat nearby raised concerns about safety, especially with the potential for sinking in such a confined area.

“We might just play bumper cars with a few boats,” I joked, trying to lighten the mood. Despite the tight quarters, we were eager to explore the area and find a suitable spot to anchor.

The Raw Bar Experience

After settling into our anchorage, we decided to venture out to the Raw Bar for some much-needed provisions. The atmosphere was lively, and we enjoyed the experience of tying up our boat and stepping onto solid ground.

“$10 a day to tie up, but it goes towards your tab if you buy food,” I mentioned, highlighting the convenience of dining at the bar. We were ready to enjoy some delicious meals and regroup before continuing our journey.

Influencers in the Wild and Observations

As we relaxed at the anchorage, we couldn’t help but notice the presence of influencers on nearby boats. Their antics, from posing in bikinis to taking selfies, added a humorous touch to our experience. “It’s like we’re in a reality show,” I remarked as we observed their antics.

However, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to what we were used to in mid-Florida. The people in Fort Lauderdale seemed more ostentatious, which led us to reminisce about the more humble areas we had visited earlier in our journey.

Reflections on Boat Life

As we settled into our anchorage, the wind picked up, making our boat rock. “I haven’t slept well with all this wind,” my wife admitted, highlighting the challenges of living on a boat. Cleaning the deck became a priority, especially seens this is our dogs backyard now.

“I hope it rains soon to wash this off,” I said, wishing for some fresh water to clean our space. The camaraderie among fellow boaters was evident, but the competitive nature of the anchorage also raised eyebrows.

Getting Ground Tackle and Watermaker

After a few days of wind and challenges, we made our way to SeaWater Pro, to acquire essential watermaker for our boat. The experience was a mix of excitement and frustration as we navigated through the process of picking up our watermaker and 300 foot of anchor chain.

“We’re ready to spend a lot of money,” I joked, knowing that outfitting a boat comes with its costs. The staff at Sea Pro were helpful, guiding us through the installation process and ensuring we understood how to operate our new watermaker.

Our sailing journey through Fort Lauderdale was filled with challenges, laughter, and unforgettable experiences. From managing tides to navigating crowded anchorages, every moment brought us closer together and taught us valuable lessons about boat life.
