Solving the Amp Mystery

​We’re back in the Jeep for Episode 04, and today’s mission started with a dead amp in my son Brandon’s rig. If your amp isn’t coming on, the first thing to check is that remote wire. In our case, the remote was shorted out. After a little rewiring, we got the JL m/600 back in the game and sounding better than ever.

Dialing in the Frequencies (The Science of the Build)

​Once we had power, it was all about the crossovers. You can’t just “plug and play” if you want clean sound—you have to set your frequencies so each speaker does exactly what it’s built for.

Here is the breakdown of how we tuned this setup:

  • Front Speakers: These are tiny, so I set them as “tweeters” at 200 Hz. They handle the highs without distorting.
  • Speaker Bar: I dialed these down to 60 Hz to give us a solid mid-range.
  • The Subwoofer: We’ve got a Pioneer sub powered by that JL m/600, sitting in a custom box tuned way down 60Hz to 25Hz.

The “Base Holes” & Seat Alignment

​To get the most out of the enclosure, I aligned the base ports (the “base holes”) directly between the seat gaps. This allows the air to move freely into the cabin without making that annoying fluttering noise against the upholstery.

​When you’re pushing air at 25Hz, it basically turns the back seat into an air pump. I even used a plastic bag to show the “greasy fan” effect—you can feel the air rushing all the way from the ports to the front seats!

Security & Mounting Tips

​Jeeps are easy targets, so we made sure this amp isn’t going anywhere. We screwed it in all the way around, but here’s a pro tip: don’t bend your amp in half. I had to build a custom ledge for the mounting screws to ensure the frame stayed perfectly flat. A bent amp is a dead amp.
