Sailing and Exploring the Dominican Republic: Our First Days in Las Terrenas

After arriving in the Dominican Republic (DR), our first couple of days in Luperon have been a whirlwind of new experiences, stunning natural beauty, and adapting to a new lifestyle that’s quite different from the Bahamas or Florida. We’re excited to share our journey so far and offer you a close-up look at what life is like living aboard and exploring this vibrant Caribbean destination.

Our First Days in the Dominican Republic: Cruising, Exploring, and Local Life

Arrival and Setting Up in Luperon

We’ve been in the DR for less than 24 hours and already the difference in costs and atmosphere compared to the Bahamas is striking. For example, mooring in Luperon is just $75 a month, whereas in the Bahamas it was $35 per day. This price disparity is a game-changer for anyone looking to live or cruise on a budget. While the DR might seem like a totally different world, the energy here is vibrant and the natural surroundings feel lush and fresh, almost like stepping into Jurassic Park with all the greenery and mountain backdrops.

The check-in process took quite a while—about 3 to 4 hours—with multiple stops to get checked in, pay fees, and sort out paperwork. Some fees required cash, others credit cards, so it’s best to come prepared with both. Despite the long process, it was smooth, and the staff were helpful which made everything easier. Once checked in, we were able to fly the Dominican Republic courtesy flag and settle in our mooring spot.

Exploring the Waterfront and Local Life

The marina area has a lively, casual vibe. We quickly found a local pizza spot serving up amazing pizza with plenty of pineapple — just what we wanted after our trip. The Presidente beer here pairs perfectly with the laid-back atmosphere, and you’ll find beer and liquor shops just about everywhere.

Walking around the dock areas reveals some local color — fishermen, busy docks, and charming (though sometimes loud) motorcycles buzzing through town. While the environment is lively, it’s not as tourist-heavy as other Caribbean hubs which we really appreciate.

Getting Out into Nature

One of the best parts of our trip was hiking and exploring around Luperon. The Dominican Republic’s landscape stunned us — tall mountains, green ridges, white sand beaches, and quiet trails that seem untouched. We definitely plan to do more exploring, including waterfall adventures and mountain hikes.

We also took our pup out on a long walk — with a lot of stray dogs around, bringing her into town isn’t an option yet, but the trails in and around Luperon provide a good escape for her and a break for us too.

Budget-Friendly Groceries and Local Markets

One big concern when moving or traveling long-term is grocery costs. We were pleasantly surprised that for about $25 we were able to stock up on eggs, bananas, potatoes, cabbage, and some fresh chilis (which we’ll be using like bell peppers since they aren’t spicy). The meat market prices are especially impressive; for example, T-bone steak was just around $4 per pound — something hard to find at that price in the U.S. or Bahamas.

This affordability adds to the appeal of living or cruising long-term in the Dominican Republic, especially compared to other Caribbean islands that tend to have higher costs.

Challenges and Realities

Of course, there are some quirks and realities of life here. The stray dog population is high, so dog owners need to plan accordingly. The noise of motorcycles and local businesses can be loud, especially at night, and some areas have floating trash that reminds you the DR is still developing in some ways.

The language barrier is also noticeable — locals speak rapid Spanish, which is hard for us to keep up with yet. Learning some basic Spanish is definitely on our to-do list, though even then, we’ve heard the locals sometimes find it hard to understand non-native speakers. It’s all part of the adventure and charm.

What’s Next for Us

We’re very excited to continue exploring the Dominican Republic. Upcoming plans include renting a car to explore mountainous interior areas and visiting well-known waterfalls. We’re also looking forward to sharing more about living aboard SV Agua Azul here in the DR, including tips on provisioning, local customs, and day-to-day life.

Overall, the DR made a strong first impression as an affordable, beautiful, and adventure-rich destination that offers a unique blend of culture and nature. Stay tuned for more updates, travel tips, and of course our cooking and DIY projects that keep life aboard interesting and fun.
