Adventurous Sailing: A Journey to Sale Cay

The thrill of setting sail never gets old, especially when you’re off to explore the beautiful waters of the Bahamas. Our latest adventure began at Ginn Sur Mer, a picturesque anchorage that offered plenty of room for our boat. While we were eager to hit the waves, we had a looming concern: we needed to make a crucial weather window tomorrow, or we’d be stuck here during a storm.

With a plan to sail to Saddle Cay the next day, we braced ourselves for what was likely to be a bumpy ride. The wind was not in our favor, and we anticipated doing a lot of hobby horsing. The waves were wild, almost surfable, and we quickly realized that our journey would test our sailing skills. Skills not yet ready for such an adventure.

Facing the Elements

As we set out the next day, the conditions were drastically different. The water was flat but still a bit rocky, and we were reminded of the unpredictable nature of sailing. We were determined to navigate through a tricky cut, and as we approached, the charts showed tricky depths. It was a tight squeeze at about 50 foot, but we managed to keep a steady course.

With our trusty charts, we carefully navigated through the shallow areas, ensuring we avoided any potential hazards. The beauty of the blue water was mesmerizing, but we had to stay focused. Despite the challenges, the thrill of sailing kept our spirits high.

Motor Sailing to Sale Cay

After some time, we shifted to motor sailing as the wind was only about 10 knots, coming at an angle that wasn’t ideal for sailing. We aimed to reach our destination before sunset. I had initially planned to leave earlier that day, but I wanted to take advantage of the high tide to get through the tricky areas safely.

As we continued our journey, the scenery was breathtaking. The vibrant blue water contrasted beautifully with the sandy bottom. It was a reminder of why we love sailing so much. However, I could sense my wife’s passage fatigue; she was eager to reach Sale Cay and start enjoying the Bahamas. The previous anchorage had been calm but lacked civilization.

Challenges on the Open Water

As we pressed on, we faced a few challenges. The boat was healing over at about 12 degrees, and my wife was feeling a bit uncomfortable. I reassured her that this was all part of the adventure, but I understood her frustration. The boat was rocking, and things were sliding around below deck.

We dropped anchor in the Northwest Harbor of Sale Cay, feeling a sense of relief and accomplishment. It had been a long day, but we made it. As we settled in, we were reminded that it was Valentine’s Day, something we had completely forgotten about amidst the chaos of sailing.

Our dinner plans were simple: a quick meal of sausage, broccoli, and mushroom soup over rice. It was a far cry from the romantic dinner we had envisioned, but it was perfect for the moment. We were exhausted but happy to be in a new location, ready to explore.

Reflections on the Journey

After a well-deserved meal, I took some time to reflect on our journey. The challenges we faced had tested our limits, but they also brought us closer together. We had navigated tricky waters, dealt with equipment issues, and managed to keep our spirits high through it all.
