Sometimes in a restoration project, you have to recognize the limits of your own tools and your own driveway. In Episode 12 of the Bayliner Bowrider 175 build, we hit a major fork in the road.
I’ve been working hard on the Mercruiser 3.0, but the latest compression test brought some bad news that we just couldn’t ignore.
The Investigation: Compression Doesn’t Lie
We were checking the health of the engine and found significantly low compression in two of the four cylinders:
- Cylinder 3: 60 lbs of pressure.
- Cylinder 4: 90 lbs of pressure.
On a boat, the engine is your life support. While 90 lbs might get you moving around a small lake, 60 lbs is a ticking time bomb. Danielle and I are planning to take this boat out on the ocean, and out there, “good enough” can get you into a lot of trouble. Neither of us wants to be stuck rowing a 17-foot bowrider back to shore.
The Solution: Going Long Block
Because of the low compression, we’ve decided to move away from the “top-end rebuild” and go for a full engine replacement. We dropped the boat off at JB Automotive in North Tampa.
The Plan:
- Pull the old, tired engine out.
- Install a brand new Long Block.
- Benefit from a 2-year warranty for peace of mind.
Protecting the Progress
One thing I really appreciate about the crew at JB Automotive is their attention to detail. Danielle has spent dozens of hours scrubbing oxidation and polishing the gel coat to a mirror finish. The shop has the back of the boat completely covered to ensure all that hard work stays clean while they’re doing the heavy lifting in the engine bay.
The Budget Status
We called this episode “Budget Busted” for a reason. Swapping an entire engine is a significant investment that wasn’t in the original “cheap hoopie” plan. However, when you’re building a boat for the ocean, you don’t cut corners on the core power plant. We’re still keeping this project as cost-effective as possible, but safety and reliability come first.
