The Logistics: 500 Spots and Full Support
The scale of MacDill’s FamCamp is impressive, featuring over 500 spots. This isn’t just a place to park; it’s a fully functioning community for full-timers and seasonal “snowbirds.”
- Full Hookups vs. Boondocking: Most of the 500 spots offer full hookups. However, for the solar-powered crowd and those with composting toilets, there is a dedicated Dry Camp Area right next to the marina.
- Mail Services: If you’re staying long-term, you don’t have to hunt down a PO Box. There is an on-site mail room. You put down a $20 deposit for a mailbox key, which is fully refundable when you leave. It’s perfect for getting your Amazon packages or technical parts delivered directly to the base.
- The Atmosphere: You definitely know you’re on a military installation. The background noise includes the “booming” of training and the constant hum of aircraft flying overhead, which, for many of us, is just the sound of freedom.
The Marina: Gateway to Tampa Bay
For the boaters and water rats, the marina setup at MacDill is top-tier.
- Self-Service Maintenance: They have a dedicated boat wash area equipped with multiple hoses, so you can rinse off the salt water immediately after a day on the bay.
- Rentals & Supplies: The Marine Supply store handles everything from basic gear to kayak rentals. If you don’t have your own vessel, you can grab a kayak and paddle out into the bay right from the on-site boat ramp.
- Security: You’ll frequently see Air Force Security Forces police boats docked here, keeping the coastline secure.
The Beach & “Seascapes”
The highlight of the base is the white sand beach. Even in April, the Florida sun is intense, and the water is already warm enough for a dip.
- The View: From the shoreline, you have a clear, panoramic view across the water to St. Petersburg.
- Amenities: The beach area is lined with covered pavilions, picnic tables, and grills. It’s a great spot to hide from the heat while still enjoying the sea breeze.
- Dining: Right off the beach is Seascapes Restaurant. You can smell the seafood as soon as you get close. They offer outside dining, which is perfect for the evenings when the Florida humidity finally starts to drop. Just watch out for the local “clans” of birds—this is essentially a seagull sanctuary, and they are always looking for a handout.
