Exploring the Exumas: A Sailing Adventure
Welcome to our journey through the breathtaking Exumas, where every wave brings a new adventure. Join us as we navigate the stunning waters, encounter unique wildlife, and embrace the serene beauty of island life. In this post, we’ll share our experiences sailing to Greater Guana Cay and beyond, highlighting the places we visited, the challenges we faced, and the unforgettable moments we cherished.
Setting Sail from Foul Cay
Our adventure began at Foul Cay, a picturesque spot in the Exumas. Although we didn’t stop at the resort due to budget constraints, the scenery was captivating. As we prepared to set sail, the excitement was palpable. We were eager to explore the nearby iguana sanctuary on Iguana Cay, a destination known for its friendly reptilian residents
With the sails hoisted and the wind at our backs, we set off. The thrill of sailing is often accompanied by a sense of freedom, and today was no different. We cruised at a comfortable speed, with the autopilot set for wind direction, allowing us to enjoy the journey without the stress of constant steering. The gentle rocking of the boat and the sound of waves lapping against the hull created a perfect atmosphere for relaxation.
Halfway to Iguana Cay
About halfway through our journey, we realized we were veering off course. My wife pointed out that the island was not in sight, and although I was keen on conserving diesel, we knew we had to adjust our route. After a brief discussion, we decided to motor closer to our destination, realizing that sometimes, practicality outweighs the thrill of pure sailing.
As we neared Iguana Cay, the anticipation grew. This island is known for its population of large iguanas that roam freely, and we couldn’t wait to see them. The waters around the anchorage were calm, providing a welcome contrast to the choppy seas we had experienced earlier. Once anchored, we prepared to explore the island and its unique wildlife.
Discovering Greater Guana Cay
Upon arrival, we quickly noticed that Greater Guana Cay was less touristy than Pig Beach, which was a relief. The serene atmosphere was inviting, and we were eager to explore the local town. We left our puppy on the boat, who was more than a little upset about being left behind, but we assured her we would return soon.
The government dock was a quaint spot, and we were thrilled to see the sharks swimming nearby. It’s always fascinating to observe marine life in their natural habitat, and this dock was no exception. After taking in the sights, we headed to the general store, where we were greeted by a variety of local goods, albeit at surprisingly high prices. A can of soup for $6 and eggs for $14 reminded us that island living comes with its own set of challenges.
Dining and Local Flavors
After our shopping excursion, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at a nearby restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the view from the bar was stunning. As we enjoyed our drinks, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful part of the world.
The menu offered a delightful array of options, and we indulged in local dishes. Dining in the Bahamas is always a unique experience, often accompanied by lively music and the warmth of the island culture. We took our time savoring our meals and soaking in the vibrant surroundings.
A Day at the Beach
The following day was dedicated to beach time. We ventured out to explore the shoreline, where soft white sand met the clear blue waters. The beach was a perfect spot to unwind, and we took advantage of the opportunity to relax and enjoy the sun. As we strolled along the beach, we spotted some friends kiteboarding in the distance, showcasing the adventurous spirit of the Exumas.
While I focused on capturing the beauty of the beach on camera, my wife couldn’t resist the urge to dip her toes in the water. The gentle waves lapping at the shore created a soothing soundtrack, enhancing the overall experience. However, we were warned about the no-see-ums, pesky little bugs that tend to bite, so we kept an eye out for them as the sun began to set.
Challenges on the Water
As we continued our sailing journey, we faced some challenges. The wind had picked up significantly, reaching up to 40 knots at times, creating rough seas. Navigating through shallow waters became a test of our sailing skills. With a draft of 6.4 feet, we had to be cautious about our surroundings, especially in areas where the charts indicated shallower depths.
Despite the challenges, we remained optimistic. We had a plan to anchor at Heffities, near White Point, but first, we needed to navigate through some tricky waters. The excitement of adventure kept our spirits high, and we appreciated the beauty of the Exumas even more during these moments of uncertainty.
Cooking on the Boat
One of the joys of sailing is the opportunity to cook on board. My wife decided to make homemade flour tortillas, a skill she has mastered over the years. As she cooked, the aroma of fresh food filled the cabin, creating a cozy atmosphere. We enjoyed delicious meals together, reminiscing about our adventures and planning our next steps.
Cooking on a boat can be challenging, especially when dealing with limited space and equipment, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Sharing meals with loved ones while surrounded by the beauty of nature adds a special touch to the experience. Our homemade tortillas were the perfect complement to our meals, and we savored every bite.
Final Thoughts on Our Exumas Adventure
As our time in the Exumas came to an end, we reflected on the adventures we had experienced. From sailing through beautiful waters to exploring local towns and enjoying delicious meals, every moment was a treasure. The Exumas offered a unique blend of relaxation and adventure, and we felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore this stunning part of the world.
While we faced challenges along the way, they only added to the richness of our experience. We learned the importance of adaptability and teamwork while sailing, and we cherished the memories we created together. As we prepared to leave, we knew that this adventure would stay with us forever, reminding us of the beauty and excitement that comes with exploring the open waters.
