Early Morning Preparations

As the sun began to rise, we found ourselves preparing for our second attempt to set sail. The weather was looking promising, which was a relief compared to our last outing. With our trusty boat by our side, we were excited to get underway. However, a little hiccup occurred when I realized I was on the wrong channel while trying to contact the bridge. It was too early for such mistakes, but we managed to get it sorted out.

With our coffee in hand—yes, I know it can make some people seasick—we were ready to take on the day. If you’re ever in Fort Lauderdale, don’t forget to grab some live bait before heading out through the 17th Street Bridge.

The Thrill of Departure

As we exited the anchorage, the sounds of the city faded behind us, replaced by the gentle lapping of waves against the hull. The sight of other boats, including the iconic Love Boat and a Disney cruise ship, added to the excitement of our journey. We were hopeful that today’s sailing would be smoother than our previous experience.

As the sun rose higher, we felt the effects of the tide, current, and waves. The wind was stronger than predicted, which meant we had to adjust our sails accordingly. Last time, we had struggled with rough seas, but today the wave direction was more favorable. It felt like we were finally in for a pleasant ride.

Settling into the Journey

With the shore receding in the distance, we were now officially on the big blue. The vastness of the ocean can be daunting, especially for those who prefer to see land around them. But out here, there was nothing but water for miles. My wife and I exchanged thoughts on the ride, noting how it had started off a bit bumpy but was improving as we ventured further.

Our furry companion, the dog, wasn’t enjoying the ride as much, but eventually settled down. We had our sails up—the headsail fully extended and the main sail reefed. The food situation was also under control; we had packed some pickles and olives for lunch, and there was a delicious steak waiting for us later.

As we sailed deeper into the Gulf Stream, we encountered some rolling waves. It wasn’t as chaotic as last time, but the motion still made walking around below decks a bit challenging. The sun was shining, and I could feel the warmth on my skin, a reminder of the beautiful day we were having.

Despite the favorable conditions, we still had to navigate carefully, as we were surrounded by cargo ships and tankers. One of the larger vessels was moving surprisingly fast, and we had to give way. This reminded us of the importance of being cautious and aware of our surroundings while out at sea.

Approaching the Bahamas

With about 17 nautical miles left to go, we were feeling accomplished. The waters were calm, and our dog was finally comfortable. We were sailing at a steady pace, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the beautiful day we were having.

As we got closer to our destination, the excitement grew. The skyline of Fort Lauderdale was gone, and the land of the Bahamas was finally coming into view. The sight of land after hours at sea is always a welcome one, and we could hardly wait to explore.

Reaching Our Anchorage

After what felt like a long journey, we finally reached our anchorage. The thrill of arriving at our destination was palpable. We quickly secured our boat and prepared to check in to the Bahamas. However, our anchor wasn’t holding as tightly as we had hoped, and we found ourselves dragging a bit.

We put out extra chain to ensure we were secure. It seemed like several other boats around us were in the same situation, all trying to find their footing in the sandy bottom. If the wind picked up, we knew we might have to make a quick getaway.

Reflections on the Journey

As we settled in for the evening, I took a moment to reflect on our adventure. Sailing can be unpredictable, full of surprises and challenges, but that’s part of what makes it so thrilling. Each journey teaches us something new, whether it’s about handling rough seas or simply enjoying the beauty of the ocean.

As we prepared for dinner, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. We had navigated through various conditions, faced our fears, and made it to our destination. The Bahamas awaited us, and we were ready to explore all that it had to offer.
