The Liveaboard Reality
Logic dictated a standard outcome, but the sub-surface reality in Puerto Plata was a mission-critical threat. On SV Agua Azul, we don’t have the luxury of a tow. If the fuel system fails, the engine dies, and the logic flow stops. We found ourselves fighting a biological war against the “Diesel Bug”—a nasty growth that turns your fuel into a filter-clogging sludge of death.
This isn’t a vacation; it’s a lifestyle of constant maintenance. While most people think of sailing as sunsets and cocktails, the reality is being chest-deep in a locker, smelling like diesel, and praying your “Redneck Engineering” holds up so you don’t get stranded in high-traffic waters.
THE BUTT PUCKER RATING: 3/5
Status: Tension
The Squeeze: Pumping chemical poison into the fuel system and flushing it through the entire diesel engine. If it doesn’t dissolve the bug perfectly, the filters clog instantly, and we’re dead in the water.
TRAVELER’S INTEL & LOGISTICS: Full Episode SITREP
Critical mission data for the transit and the objective area.
THE MISSION: Eradicating the Sludge of Death
- The Conflict: The fuel tank was infested with Diesel Bug (microbial growth) and the locker was contaminated by “meat juice” from a leaking freezer. The sludge was thick enough to clog filters and shut down the main engine.
- The Constraints: We’ve been off the boat for 9 days since returning from Puerto Plata. We’re on a budget—staying in town too long means spending money we don’t have. We had to fix this with what we had on hand.
- The Veteran Fix: Forensic application of Biobor JF and enzyme dissolvers. I built a custom fuel polishing rig using a portable transfer pump and inline suction strainers to circulate the “poison” and scrub the tank walls.
THE MISSION GEAR: Vetted Products Used
To survive a diesel bug infestation, you need the right chemistry and a way to move it. Here is the exact loadout used in this mission:
- The Pump: 12V Fuel Transfer Pump – Used to build the custom polishing rig and circulate the poison.
- The Water Remover: Power Service Clear-Diesel Fuel Tank Cleaner – Removes water and slime to destroy the bug’s habitat.
- The Enzyme: Star Tron Super Concentrated – Breaks down the “sludge of death” so it can actually pass through filters.
- The Killer: Biobor JF Diesel Fuel Additive – The heavy-duty microbicide that kills the bug on contact.
MISSION LOG: The Full Breakdown
We’re back and we’re fighting. The objective was clear: kill the bug and dissolve the remains so the filters can actually do their job. I started by hitting the tank with Biobor JF—the heavy-duty killer—and Clear-Diesel to remove the water and make the environment hostile for any future growth.
I rigged up the 12V transfer pump with custom-cut lines to circulate the fuel. The goal was to get the poison “nice and cuddly” with the bug. While the pump did its work, we discovered a secondary bio-hazard: chicken goo. A freezer leak had seeped under the locker handles, creating a disgusting mess that required immediate forensic sanitation.
After an hour of circulation, I added the Star Tron enzyme to break the sludge into fine particles and a tank scrubber to peel the slime off the walls. We let the poison fill the entire fuel system for 3 minutes. The engine gurgled, but the logic held.
DANIELLE’S GALLEY LOG: Chicken Goo Remediation 101
- The Hack: Always use secondary containment (bins) for unthawing meat in a boat freezer. Gravity and boat motion will find every seam in your lockers.
- Ingredients: Hot water, heavy-duty degreaser, and a lot of patience.
VETERAN ADVICE: The Hard Truth
Equipment doesn’t fail when it’s convenient; it fails when you haven’t looked at it for 9 days. “Redneck Engineering” isn’t about being cheap—it’s about forensic problem-solving with the limited resources available in a foreign port. If you don’t know how to build a fuel polisher from spare hoses and a transfer pump, you shouldn’t be offshore.
