If you’ve lived in a neighborhood with a strict HOA, you know that a brown lawn isn’t just an eyesore—it’s a financial liability. After a long Florida dry spell and some aggressive weed growth, I finally decided to call in the professionals at TruGreen to get the neighborhood association off my back.

Here is the “Day One” experience and a look at the technical side of lawn restoration in the Florida climate.
The Investigation: Weeds, Bare Spots, and Chinch Bugs
Our lawn was facing a triple threat that my DIY efforts couldn’t quite get ahead of.
- The HOA Pressure: We were getting notices about bare spots and weed density. In many Florida developments, if your lawn isn’t a solid carpet of green, the fines start rolling in.
- The Chinch Bug Problem: If you see patches of grass that look like they are dying from drought, but watering doesn’t help, you likely have chinch bugs. These pests suck the sap from the grass blades and inject a toxin that kills the plant.
- The Drought Factor: We’ve been stuck in a dry period, which makes the grass dormant and allows hardy weeds to take over the bare soil.
The Project: Application Day One
I had a chance to speak with Chris from TruGreen during the first application. Here’s the technical breakdown of what they put down to stabilize the yard:
- Fertilizer Application: A high-quality fertilizer to provide the nutrients needed for the grass to “wake up” and start filling in those bare areas.
- Post-Emergent Weed Killer: To target the existing weeds that have taken advantage of the thin turf.
- Chinch Bug Treatment: A preventative and curative application to stop insect damage before the rainy season hits.
The timing is actually perfect. As we head into the Florida rainy season, the combination of professional-grade nutrients and natural irrigation should do wonders for the recovery. We’ll need a follow-up visit to ensure the weeds are fully suppressed, but the goal is to have a “no-fine” lawn by the end of the month.
