Exploring the Bahamas: A Sailing Adventure
Join us on our journey through the stunning waters of the Eleuthera Bahamas as we navigate to some hidden gems. Our latest stop is Hideout, a beautiful spot to anchor, and we can’t wait to explore what lies ahead at Meek’s Patch.
Arriving at Hideout
As we arrived at Hideout, the excitement was palpable. This Royal Cay island is a great place to anchor, but we’re eager to see what Meek’s Patch has to offer. The beaches here are limited, but there’s a small sandy area next to some coral rocks that caught my eye. After a week on the boat, I think we could use a little more beach time!
Reflecting on Our Journey
It’s hard to believe it’s been a month since we set sail from Florida. We’ve only stopped at a few truly beautiful spots along the way. If you think we missed some amazing locations, feel free to call us out in the comments below! We’re currently in Eleuthera, and while we may have skipped some places on purpose to avoid bad weather, we are excited to see what Eleuthera has to offer.
Onward to Meek’s Patch Eleuthera
As we set sail towards Meek’s Patch in Eleuthera Bahamas, I noticed the water was incredibly clear. There’s no denying that the scenery is stunning, even without the beaches. As we approached our destination, I could see the lush mass behind the island, signaling that beach time was just around the corner.
Setting the Anchor at Meek’s Patch
After 23 minutes of sailing, we dropped anchor at Meek’s Patch Bahamas. However, I noticed something strange with the anchor connection—it looked like a piece fell off. I hoped it was just sand, but I couldn’t be sure. Regardless, we were finally anchored down and ready to explore!
Exploring the Island of Meek’s Patch in Eleuthera
Once we anchored, it was time for some exploration. Meek’s Patch offers picnic tables, grills, and all kinds of good stuff. My wife was in her element, rummaging through her clothes. She found some shorts and bathing suits she forgot she packed, while I was left with just a couple of shirts and shorts.
To add to our adventure, our puppy hadn’t been off the boat in a week, so we were eager to get her on land for some exploring. The beach was calling us, and we were ready for some fun in the sun!
Beach Time Adventures
As we stepped onto the beach, the water was a bit chilly, but the island was breathtaking. The turquoise water was mesmerizing, and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. We took a moment to appreciate the beauty around us—this was what we had been longing for!
While we were enjoying our beach time, I spotted some picnic tables and grills that looked almost brand new. It made me wonder how often this place gets used. However, we didn’t have a grill tank to cook anything, so we just enjoyed the moment.
Unexpected Encounters in Sailing Life
Just as we were about to leave Meek’s Patch, we had a surprise encounter! A couple of friends we met in Lake Sylvia, who also happen to be YouTubers, popped in. It’s funny how small the sailing community can be—running into familiar faces feels like a warm welcome!
After catching up with them, we had to make a move because the weather was shifting. We noticed a lot of boats arriving, likely seeking shelter from the impending weather. We decided it was best to head to another shelter area before the winds picked up.
Navigating the Waters
As we left Meek’s Patch, we passed through Current Cut Inlet. The inlet is known to be a bit tricky, but we were ready for the challenge. The current was strong, and we had to navigate carefully to avoid any shallow areas.
While sailing, we noticed the scenery around us was stunning. We were hitting speeds of six to seven knots, but the current was relentless. We had to stay focused as we maneuvered through the narrow cut, threading the needle between the rocks.
Arriving at Hatchet Bay Harbor
Finally, we made it to Hatchet Bay Harbor in Eleuthera, which we affectionately dubbed “Heart Attack Harbor” due to its tight entrance. It was a relief to be inside, away from the winds that were picking up outside. This harbor provides good protection, and it seemed like everyone else had the same idea to seek shelter from the storm.
Planning Ahead
As we settled in, we discussed our plans. We’re hoping to make it to the Exumas by next weekend, but first, we need to wait out the weather. The wind is expected to blow at 40 knots, so we’ll be staying put until it calms down.
It’s interesting to see how many boats are gathering here. Hatchet Bay seems to be a halfway point for many sailors traveling to and from the Exumas. We might take some time to explore the surrounding area while we wait for the weather to clear.
Final Thoughts
Despite the challenges, this adventure has been incredible. Each stop brings its own unique experiences, and we’re grateful for every moment. From exploring hidden beaches to navigating tricky cuts, the journey is what makes sailing in the Bahamas so special.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our voyage through these beautiful islands. Each day brings new adventures, and we can’t wait to share them with you!
