In this episode of the Bayliner Bowrider 175 restoration, we’ve finally reached the point where the project has outgrown my own tool kit. Sometimes you have to call in the professionals, and that’s exactly what we did.
The Stern Drive and Engine Removal
The stern drive has been completely removed from the boat, and the original 3.0 Mercruiser engine has been pulled and palletized. This is a huge milestone for “Big Dreams, Part 1.”
We’ve sent the engine down to Miami to be rebuilt by the experts at Excessive Engines. While I love doing as much work as possible myself, a full engine rebuild is a massive undertaking, and having a professional shop handle the core powerplant ensures we have a reliable boat for the ocean.
Cleanliness and Expertise
We’re working with Josh at JB Automotive here in Tampa, and the guy is impressively efficient. One of the best parts about having a professional shop like this handle the heavy lifting is how clean they keep the work area. There’s no grease all over the hull, and they’ve been incredibly careful with the boat’s finish.
What’s Next?
With the engine out and at the rebuild shop, we have a clear engine bay to work with. This is the perfect time to:
- Inspect the fuel tank and lines
- Continue the structural fiberglass work on the stringers
- Prepare for the new marine plywood floor
Restoring an old boat is a marathon, not a sprint. We’re making real progress, and having the engine in the hands of professionals is a major step toward getting “Big Dreams” out on the water.
