Homemade No Sugar Added Barbecue Sauce
Barbecue sauce is one of those condiments that we usually keep around because it goes with so many meats! About 6 months ago, we started really checking out the ingredients in all Barbecue sauces to find one with more natural and less sugar ingredients. What we found is some of the most popular brands had additives and preservatives that you should not consume often or at all! The better quality ingredient BBQ sauces are expensive and we use about 2 bottles a month (we like our sauces)! So the adventure begins with creating our own barbecue sauce and my family will have to love it and prefer it (not as easy as it sounds LOL).
The goal was to create a sauce with minimal ingredients, less sugar, healthier, family approved and budget friendly! It took a few months of making different creations but the one that won my family over is this one!
Sweet Garlic Barbecue Sauce Ingredients:
1 Cup Ketchup/sweetened with Honey (I call this sauce healthier because we ONLY use Ketchup sweetened with honey! One day I will make my own ketchup. Don’t worry if you don’t have this one, use the ketchup you have on hand.)
1 Tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar (don’t substitute, the sweetness in balsamic is perfect!)
1 Teaspoon Lemon Juice
1-2 Tablespoons Fresh Minced Garlic (we are major garlic people! you can adjust the garlic to your liking but try to use fresh, I cheat and buy minced garlic in water LOL, makes life simpler!)
1 Teaspoon Mustard Powder (I have also used mustard and deli mustard and it tastes good but we prefer dry mustard)
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
1/4 Teaspoon Ground Pepper
1 Teaspoon Dry Cilantro (this is the secret to my sauce and the flavor is so good! We prefer fresh cilantro but it doesn’t stay fresh for long, so I keep dried cilantro in my spice cabinet!)
Sweet Garlic Barbecue Sauce Instructions:
1. Mix the above ingredients in a bowl and let it sit in the fridge for 30 minutes. (Sometimes we don’t have time, so we whip it up before we eat, it tastes just as good but if you let it sit, the flavor intensifies, YUM!) If you are looking for some heat, my hubby adds Red Pepper!
It may seem weird that we chose to use cilantro in our Barbecue sauce but, cilantro is not just for Mexican dishes! The combination of ingredients we chose for our family’s favorite BBQ sauce came about over many different versions! The Balsamic Vinegar, garlic, lemon juice and cilantro gives this barbecue sauce a delicious taste you can put with any meat, fish, potatoes etc!
We hope you enjoy our homemade Barbecue Sauce, we do! Eventually, we will start experimenting on homemade ketchup recipes but for now, this delicious BBQ sauce is healthier and has no added sugar! We use Honey sweetened Ketchup and Organic no sugar added Balsamic Vinegar (this vinegar already has natural sugar from wine vinegar and grapes which is sweet, and we wanted to lower our sugar intake)! Try our sauce on our recipes Grilled Chicken with Balsamic or even on our Juicy Turkey, it is so delicious!
We love comments and to hear from you!
