Is Electric Tankless Water Heater Right For You
Will an electric tankless water heater work for you? Well, that is a tricky question since everyone’s needs are different, what would work for one person may not work for another. Needs may vary based on application, and hot water requirements will greatly differ from a studio apartment to a 5 bedroom house. You must calculate your GPM “Gallons Per Minute” of hot water at your peak usage. This calculation must be equal to or less the GPM flow rate of the tankless water heater.

Hidden Cost Of Tankless Water Heater
- Shower from 5 to 3.0 GPM
- Bathroom or Kitchen faucet from .5-3 GPM
- Dishwasher from 2-4 GPM
- Washing machine from 3-5 GPM
The above devices will vary greatly in GMP depending on the efficiency of the device. Do you have low flow faucets and showerheads? Does your Dishwater and/or Washer have there own heating element not requiring hot water? How many devices requiring hot water do you run at a time. What is the inlet water temperature, this will greatly affect the gpm of the tankless water heater.
For use our need in 4.0 GMP allowing us to use 2 showers and 2 faults at the same time. We live in a warm region of Florida so the unit we got will be well over this in the summer, and may struggle in the winter. If you are in a really cold region your requirements may exceed electric and you may have to go with a gas tankless water heater.
Tankless vs Tank Water Heater
Tankless vs tank water heater is a hard one and this depends on need. Do use a high GPM for a short time, or do you require endless hot water at low volume. If the answer is high volume and endless hot water prepare to shell out some money unless you live on a geothermal fissure.
The pro-con list is for only electric water heaters.
Tankless Water Heater Pros
- Endless hot water
- Lower monthly electric usage
- Longer lifespan
- Takes less physical space
Tankless Water Heater Cons
- Inconsistent hot water at high volume
- More power to run “amps”
- Requires more maintenance
- Higher install cost
Tank Water Heater Pros
- High GPM hot water flow
- Less power to run “amps”
- Little maintenance required
- Better for cold climates
Tank Water Heater Cons
- Limited hot water
- Higher monthly electric usage
- Shorter lifespan
- More space required
Our best takeaways from the above and what played into us going electric was the operating cost, and our boys use all the hot water leaving Danielle with none. You can also reduce the installation cost if you have the amps and space in your breaker box to run the tankless water heater, and you can do the work yourself. Don’t mess with the breaker box if you never worked on them, it can kill you.
